What is Rancher?

Rancher is an open source platform for running a private container service. Containers are lightweight, virtualized, self-contained, executable, and portable computing environments. Containers can be moved from machine-to-machine and run on any of the major public cloud providers as well as private networks. Rancher allows users to run containers on both Linux and Windows, and allows users to run containers from a variety of different Linux distributions.
